The Year 2026 Hailed as the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming appears especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.
A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
