Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham Bus Stop Assault Dies
A woman who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, charged over the violent incident.
Originally charged with attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened near Bullring retail complex, across from primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Eyewitness Reports
An area worker, who works nearby, described the emergency response when she finished her work period around 10 PM on Friday.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham quite frequently to see his girlfriend resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's terrible."
