Doris Makes Ireland Selection While McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall Tests, but Joe McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the Lions tour.
Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".
Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as the coach opting against selecting the province's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC league matches so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.
Conan, who started all three Lions matches over the summer, is poised to deputise for Doris if the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
